Mille Plateaux, Ultrablack and the politics of curating experimental electronic music

Since its creation in the 1990s, the labels Mille Plateaux & Force Inc. have been a decisive force in experimental electronic music. It famously showcased musical currents such as glitch or clicks & cuts and initiated a radical discourse on electronic music by appropriating the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. This philosophy is inseparable from a politics of resistance against capitalist co-optation and repression. Electronic music is part of this struggle and has to redefine its strategies of resistance again and again. Ultrablack is name of the most recent redefinition of Mille Plateaux, pushing negativity and darkness against the integration of glitch into the order of music business. 
 
Lain Iwakura, artist and organizer of Mille Plateaux/Force Inc., will give an introduction to the history and the actuality of this non-frequency-politics and curate two listening sessions with seminal works that were published by the label. She will be joined by journalist and music curator Lucia Udvardyova who is one of the most innovative thinkers and promoters of experimental music emerging from post-communist Europe. Together, they will lead an open discussion with the participants on the possibility of a radical politics in electronic music today
