Wolfgang Muthspiel Trio

The trio made up of the guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel, bassist Scott Colley and drummer Brian Blade has already earned its spurs. Following Angular Blues (2020) and Dance of the Elders (2023), it has a new album ready for ECM. Muthspiel, from Austria, has been one of the prestigious jazz label’s successful guitarists for more than a decade. The press had plenty of praise for the previous album: “The beauty is found in the nuances. There are no wasted notes, no overt showmanship, just intimate trio interaction that yields beautifully flowing, mesmerizing music,” wrote Glide Magazine. Alternating between the acoustic and electric guitar, Gary Burton’s former sideman impresses with a style that seems to circumvent time. The whispering cymbals of the star drummer Brian Blade act like waves, with Scott Colley’s idiosyncratic bass support charting the course.
